1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080 or 4K?

1280 x 720 is the safe choice: it is well above the minimum, looks sharp on phones and TVs, and fits under 2 MB, so it uploads even from the YouTube Studio app. If you upload from a computer and your design is sharp at higher resolution, 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160 is fine too; type the numbers and raise the size limit. Upscaling a small image to 4K adds no detail, so only go bigger if your source is bigger.

Why the exact size matters

The thumbnail is shown everywhere from tiny suggestions on phones to large TV screens. A 1280 x 720 image is sharp on big screens while being efficient to load. Uploading a different shape means YouTube adds black bars or crops it, which can hide your title text or faces.

Design tips that get clicks

Keep text to a few large words, because most viewers see your thumbnail at about the size of a postage stamp. Use high contrast between text and background, show a clear face or object, and avoid putting important elements in the bottom-right corner where the video length badge appears. Check how your thumbnail looks by zooming out until it is small on your screen.

Using a video frame

If you grab a still from your video, it is usually already 16:9, so resizing simply sets the right resolution. If your video is vertical, the center crop will take the middle part; use the crop tool first with the 16:9 ratio to choose which area to keep.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use PNG?

Yes, YouTube accepts PNG, but JPG keeps the file small more easily.

Do I need a verified account?

Custom thumbnails require a verified YouTube account.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size limit?

2 MB when uploading from mobile and 50 MB from desktop, per YouTube Help.

Should a YouTube thumbnail be 1920x1080 or 4K?

YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160, but any 16:9 image at least 640 px wide works. 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 is plenty if your source is not larger.

How do I reduce a YouTube thumbnail file size?

Save it as JPG instead of PNG. This preset keeps it under 2 MB automatically.
