How to use this preset
- Add your GIF; 128 x 128 and the 256 KB emoji target are preset.
- For a chat upload instead, set the size you want and type a target such as 19 MB.
- Press Resize GIF; colors and frames are reduced only as needed.
- Upload it under Server Settings, Emoji, or drop it into a chat.
The two Discord GIF limits
Most "GIF too large" errors on Discord come from one of two limits:
| Where | Limit | What to set here |
|---|---|---|
| Custom emoji | Under 256 KB (128 x 128 recommended) | Keep the preset |
| Chat attachment, free account | 20 MB at the time of writing | Target 19 MB, any size |

Why Discord GIFs get rejected or look worse
A GIF from a meme site is often 5 to 30 MB because it stores every frame at full size with up to 256 colors. For an emoji, 256 KB is a tiny budget, so the GIF has to shrink to 128 x 128 and usually lose some colors or frames. For chat, a 20 MB cap is roomier: often you only need to reduce the dimensions. Discord also shows big GIFs as a preview and may not autoplay very large files, which is why people feel "Discord compresses GIFs". Shrinking them yourself keeps control of the quality.
- Trim long GIFs to the best 1 to 3 seconds before compressing.
- Fewer colors beat fewer frames for smooth motion.
- Generic limits like 5 MB or 8 MB: use compress GIF. Changing dimensions only: resize GIF. Twitch emotes: Twitch emote resizer.
Other Discord GIF uses
Animated avatars and profile banners require Discord Nitro. Avatars display as circles, so square GIFs work best. For regular chat uploads, use the 20 MB limit described above.
Square or stretched
The preset unlocks the aspect ratio so the emoji is exactly square. If your GIF is wide, it will be squeezed slightly. To avoid that, choose a square-ish GIF, or lock the ratio and set only the width to 128 so the emoji keeps its shape.
Static emoji and stickers
For still emoji, use a square PNG at 128 x 128 instead; our resize tool can produce that. Discord stickers have their own rules: they are 320 x 320 pixels and under 512 KB, uploaded as PNG, APNG or GIF depending on server features. Type 320 into both boxes here and set the target to 0.5 MB for a sticker-sized GIF.
Frequently asked questions
Does it keep the animation?
Yes, all frames are kept unless frames must be dropped to meet the size.
Can I make an animated avatar?
Yes, but uploading animated avatars needs Discord Nitro.
What size are Discord stickers?
320 x 320 pixels and under 512 KB.
How do I compress a GIF for Discord?
For an emoji, keep the 128 x 128 and 256 KB preset and press Resize GIF. For chat, set a target just under your upload limit, such as 19 MB.
What is the Discord GIF size limit?
Custom emoji must be under 256 KB. Chat attachments on a free account are limited to 20 MB at the time of writing; Nitro allows more.
Why does Discord compress my GIFs?
Discord previews large files and may limit autoplay. Uploading a GIF that is already the right size and weight looks better.
