How to use this preset
- Add your GIF.
- The 5 MB target is filled in; change it if your platform has another limit.
- Press Resize GIF and wait while frames are re-encoded.
- Download the smaller GIF.
Small targets: 512 KB and 256 KB
Reaching 5 MB is usually easy. Getting a GIF under 512 KB or 256 KB is a different job, because the file has to lose most of its data. Type 0.5 or 0.25 into the MB box, and help the compressor by reducing the dimensions too: a 480 px wide GIF at 256 KB looks far worse than a 200 px wide one at the same weight. For Discord emoji, use the Discord GIF preset, which also sets 128 x 128.
Reduce GIF size without losing quality
Some loss is unavoidable, but you can choose where it happens:
- Dimensions first. Halving width and height cuts the file to roughly a quarter. Use resize GIF if you only need smaller pixels.
- Fewer frames. Dropping every second frame of a 50 fps GIF is barely visible.
- Fewer colors. Cartoons and screen recordings survive 64 colors; photos show banding.
- Shorter loops. Trimming a 6 second GIF to 3 seconds halves it.
Animated Twitch emotes use GIFs too; check the Twitch emote page for their sizes. For still images, compress image gives far smaller files than a single-frame GIF.
Why GIFs get so big
GIF is an old format that stores every frame with limited compression. A few seconds of video converted to GIF can easily reach 20 or 30 MB. Many sites and apps reject GIFs above 5, 8 or 10 MB, and big GIFs load slowly in chats and on web pages.
How this compressor reaches the target
The tool rebuilds your GIF and checks its size. If it is still too big, it tries reducing the palette to 128 or 64 colors, then shrinks the dimensions in steps of about 15 percent, and finally drops every second or third frame while keeping the total duration. It stops as soon as the GIF fits, so you keep as much quality as possible.
Before you compress
If the GIF came from a video, the best results come from making the GIF again at a smaller size from the video. If you only have the GIF, this tool is the quickest fix.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a GIF to 5 MB?
Add it here with the 5 MB target and press Resize GIF.
Can I compress a GIF to 8 MB or 10 MB?
Yes, type 8 or 10 into the target box.
Will the GIF still be animated?
Yes.
Why does it say it could not reach the target?
Very long GIFs may need a smaller width or a shorter clip.
How do I compress a GIF without losing quality?
Reduce the dimensions and trim the length first. Those cut the file size the most while keeping colors and smooth motion.
Can I compress a GIF to 256 KB or 512 KB?
Yes. Type 0.25 or 0.5 in the MB box. Smaller dimensions give a much better result at these sizes.
How can I reduce GIF file size?
Lower the dimensions, frame count or number of colors. This tool does all three automatically to hit your target.
