How can I take a passport photo at home?
Yes, you can take your own passport photo. The U.S. State Department says a friend or family member can take it (travel.state.gov). Shoot against a plain white wall, and this tool does the rest: it crops to the exact 2x2 head size and makes a printable 4x6 sheet.
How to make a passport photo at home
- Take the photo. Stand a few feet in front of a plain white or off-white wall in even daylight, facing the camera with a neutral expression and both eyes open. Ask someone to take it at head height. Don't take a selfie at arm's length.
- Upload and choose a size. US 2x2 inch is selected for you. Other sizes, such as Pakistan, India, Saudi and UAE, are in the list. The maker detects your face and positions the crop automatically. You can adjust it.
- Download or print. Save a single photo as JPG, or create a 4x6 inch or A4 print sheet with 6–8 or more copies as a JPG or PDF. Print it on photo paper at home or at any photo printing kiosk, then cut the photos out.

| India online passport | 630 x 810 px | Passport Seva upload; see Indian passport photo size |
| India e-Visa | Square JPEG, 10 KB-1 MB | Indian e-Visa application |

The U.S. Department of State says the printed photo must be 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), with the head measuring 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm) from chin to top of head (travel.state.gov). For other countries, always confirm the size on the issuing government's website, because rules change.
Print a 4x6 or A4 sheet, or save a digital file
This free 4x6 passport photo template works without a passport photo printer or app: any photo counter or home printer can print it. Most people want several copies. A 4x6 inch sheet is the standard photo print size in the U.S., so you can order it cheaply from any photo printing service. For US 2x2 photos, choose the 5x7 sheet: it holds six photos with white gaps for easy cutting, and you can print it as a standard 5x7 photo at CVS, Walgreens or any photo counter. The 4x6 sheet also fits six 2x2 photos, but edge to edge, so cut along the lines. A4 suits most other countries. The PDF option keeps the exact dimensions, so make sure your printer is set to "actual size" or 100% (not "fit to page"), or the photos will print at the wrong size. Then check one photo with a ruler before you cut them all.
If you're applying online, use the single JPG. Online systems often have their own pixel and file-size rules. For example, the UK asks for a digital photo at least 600 pixels wide by 750 pixels tall, between 50 KB and 10 MB (GOV.UK).
How to take a passport photo with your iPhone or phone
- Use the rear camera, not the front selfie camera. It's sharper and avoids distortion.
- Have someone hold the phone about 4 feet (1.2 m) away at eye level. The State Department recommends the camera be "several feet (1.2 m) away" (travel.state.gov).
- Face a window for soft, even light, and avoid overhead lights that cast shadows.
- Turn off filters, beauty modes and portrait-mode background blur.
- Remove glasses, and keep hair away from your eyes.
- Take several shots and upload the sharpest one.
Background: white, off-white or blue, and when not to change it
The maker can set a white, off-white, light blue or blue background. The best results, and the safest for strict authorities, come from taking the photo against a real plain white or off-white wall. The U.S. State Department says to submit the original photo without digital changes, and lists photos whose background was changed with a retouching tool as unacceptable. If your wall isn't white, it advises covering it with a white sheet and retaking the photo (travel.state.gov). That's why the US preset starts on "Keep original". Use background replacement only where the authority you're applying to allows it, and check first.
Before you submit: check the official requirements
This tool helps you size and crop a photo. It can't guarantee that any government will accept it. Each authority sets its own rules on size, head position, expression, glasses, background, photo age and printing. Before you submit, read the official page for your document:
- U.S. passport: travel.state.gov
- UK passport: GOV.UK
- Canada passport: Canada.ca
Canada note: Canada requires passport photos taken by a commercial photographer or photo studio and doesn't accept photos printed at home or edited photos (Canada.ca). For the application itself, go to a studio.
