- Press Compress; quality is lowered step by step until the file fits.
- Compare the before and after sizes shown under the preview.
- Download the JPG and upload it to your form.
Where 200 KB is the limit
Two big Indian exams use 200 KB as the top of their photo range, and 200 KB also sits safely under the U.S. visa photo cap:
| Portal | Requirement |
|---|---|
| UPSC upload instructions | Photo 20-200 KB; face covers at least 75% of the photo |
| NEET-UG 2026 bulletin | Photo 10-200 KB, white background, face about 80% |
| U.S. State Department (DS-160, DV) | Photo at most 240 KB, so 200 KB clears it |
Limits taken from the official notices listed, checked in October 2026. Rules change between exam cycles, so always confirm the numbers in your own notice before uploading.
Note that the face-size rules are about framing, not file size. Crop first so your face fills the frame, then compress.
PNG or JPG at 200 KB?
A PNG is lossless, so a photo saved as PNG is often several megabytes and cannot be squeezed to 200 KB without converting. This page outputs JPG by default, which is what UPSC and NEET ask for. Keep PNG only for logos or screenshots where sharp edges matter, and use the PNG resizer to shrink their dimensions instead.
Tips
- Exam photos: crop to head and shoulders before compressing.
- A U.S. visa photo also has to be square and 600-1200 px: use the DS-160 photo tool.
- Need a hard 100 KB? Use resize image to 100KB. Larger files: compress to 1MB.
Compress, not shrink
Unlike resizing presets, this page keeps your image at its original width and height whenever it can. It lowers the JPG quality step by step until the file is under 200 KB, and only reduces the dimensions if even low quality is not enough. That is ideal when a form or website needs a good-sized image but caps the file size.
How much quality do you lose?
For a typical 3 to 5 MB phone photo, 200 KB is about a 95 percent reduction, yet it usually looks the same on a phone or laptop screen. You may notice a slight loss in very fine textures such as grass or fabric if you zoom in closely.
Step by step for a 200 KB form upload
Start from the original photo rather than a screenshot of it. If the form also asks for specific dimensions, open the resize tool first, set the pixel size, download, and then compress that file here. When a portal asks for a minimum file size as well, for example 50 to 200 KB, the result of this preset is normally close to 200 KB and satisfies both. Keep the file name simple, with no spaces or special characters, because some older portals reject unusual names.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a picture to 200 KB?
Add it here with the preset target and press Compress.
Can I compress a PNG to 200 KB?
Yes, it is saved as JPG or WebP to reach the target.
Will the dimensions change?
Only if quality alone cannot reach 200 KB.
Can I compress to 150 KB or 250 KB?
Yes, change the number in the target box to any value.
The form says the image is invalid. What now?
Check the required format and dimensions as well as the size, and keep the file name simple.
How do I compress an image under 200 KB?
Add it and press Compress. The result is at or below 200 KB, and the dimensions are kept if quality reduction alone is enough.

This page is free with no sign-up or watermark. The JPEG is compressed in your browser.
Should I compress to 200 KB as PNG or JPG?
