AVIF to JPG Converter

Convert AVIF images into standard JPG files that work in every photo viewer, document and upload form.

How to use the AVIF to JPG tool

  1. Choose the JPG quality (90 percent is a good default).
  2. Drop one or more .avif files into the box.
  3. Download the JPGs one by one or as a ZIP.

What is AVIF?

AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec. It produces very small files at high quality, so a growing number of websites and image services deliver pictures as AVIF. The catch is support: many desktop programs, printers, office suites and older phones cannot open AVIF yet, and some upload forms reject it.

Why convert to JPG

JPG is the most widely supported image format in the world. Converting an AVIF to JPG makes it usable in Word and PowerPoint, older versions of Photoshop, print shops, messaging apps and almost any website form. The JPG will be somewhat larger than the AVIF, because AVIF compresses more efficiently, but it will open everywhere.

Choosing a quality

At 85 to 92 percent quality the JPG looks the same as the AVIF for practically every image. Lower settings save space but can show blocky patterns in smooth areas like skies. If the image needs to fit a size limit, convert at high quality first and then use the compress tool with a KB target.

Browser support

This converter uses your browser's own AVIF decoder, which is built into current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari. If you see an error, update your browser. Older browsers that cannot display AVIF also cannot convert it.

Transparency and animation

JPG has no transparency, so transparent parts of an AVIF are filled with white. Animated AVIF files are converted using a single frame.

Private and unlimited

Files are decoded and re-encoded on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no limit on how many files you convert.

Batch conversion

Select several AVIF files at once and they are converted one after another, then saved together as a ZIP.

AVIF vs WebP vs JPG

AVIF usually makes the smallest files, WebP comes next, and JPG is the largest but the most compatible. For sharing and printing, compatibility wins, which is why converting to JPG is so useful.

Saving AVIF images from websites

Some browsers save images as AVIF when you right-click and choose Save image. You can also see the format in the file name ending in .avif. Drop those files here and they come back as standard JPGs, ready to edit or share.
