Facebook image sizes at a glance
Meta does not publish one fixed table of image sizes, and the layout changes from time to time. The sizes below are the ones widely used by designers and social media tools. Use them as starting points, not official rules:
| Image | Size to type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Profile picture | 720 x 720 (any square works) | Shown as a circle |
| Page cover | 851 x 315 | Commonly cited desktop size; phones show a narrower slice |
| Link or landscape post | 1200 x 630 | About 1.91:1 |
| Square post | 1080 x 1080 | 1:1 |
| Group or event cover | About 1.91:1, e.g. 1640 x 856 | Check the preview |
Making a profile picture fit
Facebook uploads a square and displays a circle, so the corners are always hidden. Center your face and leave space around the head. If the whole picture must fit (a logo or a group photo), make it square first by cropping wide, or add a plain margin around it in a design app, so nothing important sits in the corners.
Covers: plan for mobile
A cover crops differently on phones and computers. Keep logos, faces and text in the middle of the image, away from the left and right edges. On a personal profile, the bottom-left corner sits behind your profile picture. Facebook recompresses uploads, so for covers with text, a PNG often stays crisper than a JPG.
- Frame the square by hand with PFP crop.
- Same photo for Instagram? Use resize image for Instagram.
- Any other shape: change aspect ratio or resize to square.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Facebook crop my photo?
Non-square uploads get cropped. Start from a square.
How do I resize a photo for a Facebook profile without cropping?
Make it square first. Crop wide around your subject, or add a plain border so the whole picture becomes square, then resize to 720 x 720.
How do I resize an image for a Facebook cover photo?
Type 851 x 315 into the boxes, a widely used cover size, press Resize image and keep important content in the center for mobile.
How can I make my whole picture fit on Facebook?
Match the shape Facebook shows: square for profiles, wide for covers. A photo with the right shape is not cropped further.
What is the Facebook cover photo size ratio?
The commonly used 851 x 315 size is about 2.7:1. Meta does not publish an official figure, so check the preview after uploading.
