Who asks for under 1 MB
A 1 MB ceiling leaves room for full-quality photos, so the challenge is usually a 4 to 12 MB phone picture or a heavy PNG export:
| Use | Requirement |
|---|---|
| India e-Visa | Photo JPEG, 10 KB-1 MB, square (height equals width) |
| Twitch auto-resize emote | One square PNG, 112-4096 px, under 1 MB |
Limits taken from the official notices listed, checked in October 2026. Rules change between exam cycles, so always confirm the numbers in your own notice before uploading.
When 1 MB still fails
Some portals count 1 MB as 1,000 KB rather than 1,024 KB. If an upload at 1,010 KB is refused, type 950 into the target box and compress again. For the India e-Visa, the photo also has to be square, so crop it with resize image to square first.
Tips
- A 12-megapixel photo can usually reach 1 MB at full resolution with almost no visible change.
- Transparent PNGs keep their alpha only as PNG; for a Twitch emote, use the Twitch emote resizer.
- Many files at once? Use bulk resize.
- Smaller caps: 200 KB or any KB size.
Full resolution where possible
At a 1 MB target the tool can almost always keep the original pixel dimensions and only fine-tune the JPG quality. Even 48 megapixel photos usually fit with only a mild reduction. You keep the ability to zoom in and print at reasonable sizes.
Compress PNG to 1 MB
Large PNGs, such as screenshots from high-resolution screens or design mockups, can be 5 MB or more. The tool converts them to JPG or WebP to bring them under 1 MB. Choose WebP if you need to keep transparency. For text-heavy screenshots, the quality at 1 MB is normally excellent.
Quick checklist before uploading
Check three things after compressing: the size shown is under the limit, the image still looks sharp when you zoom to 100 percent, and the format is accepted by the site. If the portal accepts only JPG, keep the default output. If it accepts WebP, you can try it for an even better result at the same size. If you have several files to send, compress each one here, or first use the bulk resizer to bring them all to around 2500 pixels wide, which usually lands every photo under 1 MB.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a photo to 1 MB?
Add it here, keep the 1 MB target and press Compress.
My upload still says too large.
Some sites count 1 MB as 1,000 KB; set the target to 950 KB.
Does it keep transparency?
Choose WebP output to keep it; JPG fills it with white.
Should I use JPG or WebP for 1 MB?
JPG works everywhere. WebP gives better quality at the same size if the site accepts it.
Can I compress many images to 1 MB at once?
Use bulk resize with a width of about 2500 pixels; most photos then fall below 1 MB.
How do I compress an image to 1 MB on iPhone?
Open this page in Safari, choose the photo (Safari usually hands HEIC photos over as JPG), press Compress and save the JPG to Files.
How do I compress an image to under 1 MB?
The target is 1024 KB. If your portal counts 1 MB as 1000 KB, type 950 for a safe margin.
Can I compress an image to 1 MB without losing quality?
For most photos the change is not visible at 1 MB because the resolution is kept and only fine noise is removed.
