Indian passport photo: 630 x 810 pixels
The Passport Seva ICAO photo guideline asks for photos of 630 x 810 pixels with a white background, with the face covering 80-85% of the photo. It also says photos should be unaltered by computer software and should be taken from 1.5 m away. So our India online passport preset only crops and resizes: background change is turned off. Take the photo against a real plain white wall.
| Document | Official size | Background |
|---|---|---|
| Passport (photo guideline) | 630 x 810 px, face 80-85% | White |
| e-Visa | Square (height = width), JPEG 10 KB-1 MB | Plain white or light-coloured |
| OCI | 51 x 51 mm (2 x 2 in), head 25-35 mm | Plain light-coloured |
India e-Visa photo
The Indian e-Visa site asks for a square JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB, with a plain light-coloured or white background, the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin centred in the frame, and no glasses, borders or shadows. Our India e-Visa preset makes a square JPEG within that file-size range.
OCI photo
The OCI photo specification asks for a 51 x 51 mm (2 x 2 inch) photo with a plain light-coloured background and a head size of 25-35 mm. It says both conventional and digital photography are acceptable, and conventional or digital printing may be used. Use the "India 2x2 in" preset and print a 4x6 or A4 sheet if you need copies.
How to take the photo
- Stand in front of a plain white wall in even light, about 1.5 m from the camera.
- Face the camera with both eyes open. Remove glasses for the e-Visa.
- Open the maker with the right preset and choose your photo.
- Check the crop and download the JPG.
Printed Indian passport photos: 4.5 x 3.5 cm
If you apply through a District Passport Cell (DPC), Speed Post Centre (SPC) or Common Service Centre (CSC), the instruction booklet asks for a printed photo of 4.5 x 3.5 cm. At a regular Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) no photo is needed, because it is taken at the counter. Check which office you are booked at before printing.

Applying from the US
Indians in the US often need two different photos: a US-style 2 x 2 inch square for OCI and some consulate services, and the Indian 630 x 810 portrait for Passport Seva. The shapes are not interchangeable, so pick the right preset in the maker rather than cropping one into the other.
- Face should fill 80 to 85% of the photo; step back about 1.5 m from the camera.
- Use a real white wall; the guideline asks for photos unaltered by software.
- Need to hit a KB limit too? Use resize image to 50KB or compress to 1MB for e-Visa.
- US passport instead? See US passport photo.
